Timetable

The Mariazellerbahn is a regular line of the Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB, running between St. Pölten and the pilgrimage town of Mariazell, with a branch line from Ober Grafendorf to Mank.
That means you can purchase tickets at any point of sale in the ÖBB network at the usual standard fares (except the steam hauled Panoramic 760).

From the morning until noon there are four daily trains available, E6841 is an additional service on Saturaday und Sunday, but running daily from 1st May until 26th October!
E 6835 (daily) 07:25 - 09:59 "Ötscherland"
E 6837 (daily) 08:24 - 10:55 "Ötscherbär", usually with colourful carriages
E 6841 (see note above!) 10:24 - 12:51 usually EMU 4090
6843 (daily) 13:27 - 15:56 "Bürgeralpe"
6845 (daily) 16:28 - 18:57 "Mariazellerland"
In the opposite direction there are also four (five) through trains leaving Mariazell, 6840 only Mo-Fr from 2nd May until 26th October. (There's an additional service between Mariazell and Gösing, with timetable depending on the day of the week.)
6830 (daily) 07:47 - 10:15 "Bürgeralpe"
6832 (daily) 11:47 - 14:20 "Mariazellerland"
6840 (see note above!) 12:55 - 15:16 usually EMU 4090
E6834 (daily) 14:52 - 17:22 "Ötscherland"
E 6842 (daily) 16:47 - 19:17 "Ötscherbär"
6838 (Sat, Sun) 17:54 - 20:20
Beside these services over the whole length of line there are additional trains available terminating at Laubenbachmühle or Frankenfels. For more detail please take a look at the timetable available at ÖBB. The timetable of the steam hauled Panoramic 760 is different from the electric trains!

Please bear in mind that timetables and fares may be changed by the operator at short notice, so the Friends of the Mariazellerbahn cannot guarantee validity and accuracy in whole or in part. Prices given are merely illustrative!
For up to date information, please check the ÖBB timetable and the ÖBB fares available online.

For larger groups, it's possible to book entire coaches. Two buffet coaches also are available. For individuals arriving by car, or groups by bus consider the possibility to start a trip at a station between Ober Grafendorf and Frankenfels, since there's more parking space available than in the town of St. Pölten, and the tour covers the most spectacular sections of the line.

groups:

A tip for small groups (in fact any group of more than just one person) is the "1 PLUS-Freizeitticket" of the ÖBB.

For groups of six or more persons, the ÖBB offers special reduced fares including reservations. Booking is possible at every main station, at the Bahn-Totalservice and online at the ÖBB timetable page.
We recommend that you book in advance and also early during the peak season, when occupancy depends on fine weather conditions and trains could get a bit overcrowded quite suddenly on sunny weekends. The down services from Mariazell in the afternoon could become especially problematic for a larger group without a reservation!

It's possible to run additional coaches on trains hauled by 1099 electric engines. It depends on the size of the group, the availibility of rolling stock, and whether it's possible to replace a railcar by an engine-hauled train. The most popular services offer the possibility of additional carriages. A train with more than seven coaches requires double headed service by two 1099s!
For 20 or more persons (€ 364,-), it's possible to get one of two available buffet coaches for € 187,- (without staff).
Example: 3 passenger coaches plus 1 buffet for € 1.486,-
Standard eight-wheel coaches offer 52 places, but due to the reduced size on narrow gauge, this could become a bit uncomfortable during the long ride. We recommend that you calculate just three persons for one four-seat compartment. That way our example train would offer space for 117 persons.
