Panoramic 760 - Austria Tourist Train
timetablehomeguest book

The Panoramic 760 Austria Tourist Train, formerly also known as "the nostalgic train", is an offer for tourists and railfans on the Mariazellerbahn. Due to the great success of the nostalgic trains which formerly ran only on very special occasions, the "Panoramic 760" was introduced in December, 2002 as a regular service on every Saturday and Sunday, run by 1099 electrics with the Panoramic coaches and so providing real first class seating after years of second class only.
The poor success of this train - apparently caused by a lack of marketing - led to downgrading it to a standard regional train after just one year of service however. What remains quite successful are the steam hauled trains which now also run on an announced timetable, making them the first sheduled steam hauled services to Mariazell since electrification in 1911!

The Panoramic 760 consists of:
steam engine Mh6 (former ÖBB 399.06)   max. 5 eight-wheel coaches
electric 1099 (with old ÖBB logo)   max. 7 eight-wheel coaches per engine
four-wheel support van for steam engine, grey -
eight-wheel saloon coach 50 seats
eight-wheel coach with kid's compartment, brown 26 seats
eight-wheel luxurious saloon coach 20 seats
eight-wheel dining coach 12 seats
eight-wheel observation saloon coach 30 seats provided by Club Mh.6

The friends of the Mariazellerbahn considered the regular Panoramic 760 the premium offer of the Mariazellerbahn and of quite some interest for national and international travel agencies. Unfortunately many local authorities neglected the development in railway tourism during the last years and the introduction of the tourist train hit them pretty suddenly.
We still try to provide the information you might need but wouldn't get elsewhere!

luxurious saloon coach

This coach dates back to 1912. In 1957, the original wooden body was replaced by a new standardized steel body, as was done for all eight-wheel carriages of the Mariazellerbahn during a reconstruction programme in the 1950s and 1960s. During repair after an accident, the damaged front side was equipped with a large panorama window and it received furnishings resembling the art noveau observation coach of the early years of the line. It's equipped with Webasto and electric heating, refrigerator and a sound system and as many as seven tables and 20 chairs are available.

It usually runs on the rear end of the train with the panorama window facing St. Pölten. Technically, it's possible to turn this coach on the turntable at Mariazell to have it on the rear end for the return trip.

During peak season this special car is booked up very often, so reservations are recommended in advance and early!

dining coach

This important piece of equipment for the Panoramic 760 was built as a combined first and second class saloon in 1957 on the frames of one built in 1912. In 1998, it was converted to a dining coach in the workshops at St. Pölten, where it received it's kitchen and art noveau style interior consisting of three lounges with tables.
It's equipped with Webasto and electric heating, two refrigerators, gas stove, a 300 litres water tank, and a sound system.

coach with kid's compartment

A former combined passenger and luggage carriage was partially converted to a children's playground on wheels. It's named "Pano's Kids Treff". (no picture)

first-class observation coach

The first-class observation coach was converted from a standard passenger saloon coach based on frames from 1908.
It's owned by the Club Mh6 and it's also available on request. It's special characteristics are the four large panorama windows providing an unimpeded view along the trip.

With the introduction of this special car, real first-class travel came back to Austrian narrow gauge tracks.

additional passenger coaches

The traditional livery of the Mariazellerbahn coaches was a medium brown tone like the
1099s in their original appearance. After being rebuilt, the electric engines were the first to receive the characteristic, and now classic, red and cream colour sheme. The coaches were repainted in this colur sheme in the early eighties, but some of them still remain in their original brown.
Two of them are available to provide additional capacity for the Panoramic 760. These carriages are named "Hofstetten-Grünau" and "Club Mh6".
